My daughter's 3rd flight at 13 weeks - toys & strollers!

I realize that in order to write about traveling with babies I can't rely on my memory. As one does tend to forget the unpleasant. Of course, there must have been annoying, tiring events which occurred during our travels, but I really just remember the trips. So, thank goodness for my journal to remind me of all the details! My daughter took her third flight at 13 weeks old. So, at only 13 weeks old she had been to D.C. for an engagement party, to San Diego to visit friends and to San Francisco to join Dad on a work trip.

Another important TIP is to travel LIGHT. Babies don't need toys. They just want to look at you. You can entertain your baby with faces, fingers and even folk songs all day long. Plus, some international airlines have toys to hand out. The only thing I remember schlepping was a "Bjorn" carrier AND a stroller. The stroller was slightly sturdier than an umbrella stroller. It was light, folded up small and would recline for sleep, sit up for strolling and it had a cover for sun. And, I could keep my bag and baby blankets in it when we walked. We would check it in at the gate and it would be waiting for us right as we stepped off the plane and onto the jetway. We usually did not take the car seat as it was such a pain. We took turns holding our daughter in our laps. Plus, I didn't want to pay for another seat until we had too! We always called ahead to reserve a car seat with the car rental agency.

In San Francisco, we stayed in a friend's apartment. He was young, single with NO crib. So, I remember creating one out of an extra sofa. The biggest lesson I had to learn was that my day (& night) wouldn't always go as planned. That is of course, true with kids of all ages, but more so when they are little as there are unexpected diaper & nursing stops. And, we were lucky that our daughter usually fell asleep in the stroller for her naps. That is when we would try to eat somewhere ourselves. But, I can remember holding or nursing my daughter at many restaurant tables. I got pretty discrete at nursing. Plus, no one should have to eat their meal in a bathroom. So, nursing should be allowed anywhere. That's philosophy I stuck with for my entire "nursing" career which lasted 15 months for each of my children. I admit, I loved it. Plus, it kept me skinny. ha!

My baby's first flight at 10 weeks old!

At 10 weeks old my daughter took her first flight. I now write this in disbelief. I guess I didn't know better! ha She took her 2nd flight one week later at 11 weeks old. How in the world did I do this? I should say "we" as I know traveling with my children was only made easier because I had the help of my husband. Packing at this point was easy. I would calculate the number of diapers needed and add a few extra. I didn't really take a purse, I just had an attractive diaper bag which doubled as both. The great thing about babies is that their outfits are easy (you get to pick) and they are SMALL! Another thing that made traveling easier is that I nursed. So, there were no bottles or formula to pack. I admit, while traveling I nursed on demand. Meaning, whenever there was stress and nursing would relieve it - I did it. I know some of you think that sounds crazy as that could mean little or no relief for mom, but I focused on the "cons" of this type of arrangement. At an early age, I liked that my baby was always with me or near me. So, it didn't matter that I was the only one who could feed her. Plus, nursing relaxed ME as well. And, in between feedings I did pass her off. On the first flight we were headed to my sister-in-law's engagement party in D.C. Because my daughter was only 10 weeks old, I couldn't imagine leaving her with anyone AND I did want to go to the party. So, we went. My daughter did great, and many people volunteered to hold her. We left when we needed to leave. I was able to show off my new baby and go to a party in D.C. and have a good time!

Traveling with Children

I have traveled my whole life, but I have been traveling with my children since each was safely in the womb. Now they are both out. My daughter is now 10 years old and my son is 8. For me, traveling is an escape - even with children. There would always be diaper to change and little mouths to feed, but at least it wouldn't be done alone in my home. It didn't seem as monotonous as I was out in the world experiencing life .....just maybe at a slower pace.

I hope this blog will help others with children travel with ease and without fear and answer any questions.
